The big three are gold (or other forms of cash), XP (personal advancement) and magic items. Other things like social advancement, favour with NPCs (or deities in the case of paladins and clerics) and information relevant to the campaign are nice, but can be seen as second-best. The big three (Gold, XP and magic items) are the main motivations for PCs going on adventures.
