Perilous Adventures

I'm quite excited because I'm going to be playing Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay this Friday. I love WFRP to bits and it is probably my favourite fantasy rpg -- if you don't count Pendragon; if you do, then they're joint first -- but I never seem to be able to play it. I played a bit of the first edition back in my school days, and we got about a third of the way into The Enemy Within, but that was it; the second edition passed me by, and although one of the group does have the third edition with all the bells and whistles and fourteen bumpillion fiddly bits, we've not had a chance to play it.

So I'm very much looking forward to this week's game. We'll be playing the second edition, in an urban thieves' guild setting the GM has described as "The Sopranos meets Blackadder", which is just about the perfect tone for a WFRP game. I'll be playing Hammerhead Harry, a less-than-clever dwarf enforcer who's not much good at thievery but can kick a door down if you point him in the right direction. I can't wait.

  4. Very awesome! If you count all editions of D&D as "one game" (including Pathfinder), then WFRP is the fantasy RPG I've played the most after D&D. We spent the Summer after my senior year in high school switching from D&D to WFRP for something different, and played our way through Power Behind the Throne and Something Rotten in Kislev. I was an elf Minstrel-Demagogue, if I remember correctly. Fun times. I love the mood/atmosphere of the setting.

  5. Yes that does sound fun! Urban thieves' guild adventures... Now that gives me an idea...

I'm hoping to play some WFRP some time too. I've never played it, but someone I've been emailing who should be moving my way has said he wants to GM it, so I hope that comes to pass!

  7. Like Martin R Thomas says, I found myself DMing D&D, but WFRP seemed to have really taken off in the UK (and amongst my friends), so I'm thinking that I probably played WFRPG as a player quite a bit, in comparison to other games. I didn't own the rulebook until later. (Very baffled with what Fantasy Flight games seem to have done with the franchise, and never understood why Games Workshop walked away when it was so entrenched in the Olde World of WH) I think there wasn't enough wild nordic player-character types for me, all of the careers seemed very city-fied and decadent - needs more barbarian PCs. ;) Of course, for me now, the rotting empire vs the chaotic hinter lands does appeal. I remember we all really loved the critical hits and fumbles (much more irreverent than in RQ) I hope the campaign goes well! :)
